Funeral Readings
“Words of Comfort and Hope”
The following list serves as a reference for families selecting readings for a Catholic funeral. These Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel passages offer comfort, hope, and reassurance, emphasizing God’s mercy, resurrection, eternal life, and the promise of being reunited with Christ.
Families may choose one or more readings based on their loved one’s faith and the message they wish to convey. The priest or deacon presiding over the service can assist in selecting the most appropriate passages.
Each reading reflects the Christian understanding of death—not as an end, but as a transition to eternal life with God. Whether expressing trust in God’s salvation, the victory of Christ over death, or the promise of resurrection, these scriptures offer prayerful reflection and spiritual support during a time of mourning.
