Confirmation

"Strengthened by the Spirit, Called to Live as Witnesses of Christ."

Welcome to the Sacrament of Confirmation, a powerful step in the journey of faith. Through Confirmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, strengthening us to live boldly as followers of Christ. It is a sacrament of maturity and commitment, deepening our bond with God and calling us to be His witnesses in the world.

Confirmation Programme

In our Parish, the Sacrament of Confirmation is typically received by young people, who are at Year 9 and already baptised.

In the programme, young people will:

  • Learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can be lived out in everyday life.

  • Explore the meaning of the Creed and the Baptismal Promises that were made for them.

  • Discover the various signs and symbols of the Sacraments, especially the symbols of anointing and their link to calling to be priest, prophet and king.

Applications for the Parish Confirmation Programme are now being received. If you are in Year 9 or above and you are either a parishioner of our parish or you worship here regularly, then please complete the Registration Form below.

The Closing Date for applications is Friday 8 November 2024.

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes Baptism, sealing us with the Holy Spirit and marking us as full members of the Catholic Church. During this sacred rite, the bishop or priest anoints us with holy chrism and prays for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts. These gifts—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—empower us to live our faith with courage and love.

“And you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.” (Acts 1:8)

The Importance of Confirmation

Confirmation is a milestone in the spiritual life, signifying a mature commitment to the Catholic faith. It is a time to embrace one’s identity as a child of God, to deepen one’s relationship with Christ, and to accept the mission to share His love with others. Through Confirmation, we are invited to stand firm in faith and to let our lives reflect the light of Christ.

Confirmation Preparation Program

Here’s what our program includes:

  • Catechism Classes: These classes provide a foundation in Catholic teaching and help candidates understand the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

  • Retreats and Reflection: Candidates participate in retreats, giving them time to reflect on their faith and grow closer to God. These retreats include prayer, worship, and group discussions to deepen their spiritual journey.

  • Service Projects: As part of their preparation, candidates are encouraged to engage in acts of service, reflecting Christ’s love by helping others. Service projects emphasize the call to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world.

  • Choosing a Sponsor: Each candidate chooses a sponsor, a practicing Catholic who will offer guidance and support during the Confirmation journey. The sponsor serves as a spiritual mentor, providing a living example of faith.

The Confirmation Ceremony

The Sacrament of Confirmation is a joyful and solemn celebration. Here’s what to expect during the ceremony:

  1. Renewal of Baptismal Promises: Candidates renew their baptismal vows, affirming their faith in God and renouncing sin.

  2. Laying on of Hands: The bishop or priest lays hands on each candidate, calling down the Holy Spirit.

  3. Anointing with Chrism: The bishop or priest anoints each candidate with holy chrism oil, sealing them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  4. Words of Blessing: The bishop or priest prays for each candidate to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit and to live as a witness of Christ.

Choosing a Confirmation Name

Candidates often choose a saint’s name for Confirmation, symbolizing a special connection with a holy person who serves as a role model in faith. This saint becomes an inspiration and intercessor, encouraging the candidate on their spiritual journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if one parent isn’t Catholic?
We warmly welcome families from all backgrounds. At least one parent should be committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
  • How many godparents can we choose?
The Church requires at least one Godparent but it is common to have two – one male and one female. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, confirmed and at least 16 years old. Additional friends or family members who are baptized Christians can act as honorary godparents or "witnesses".
  • Is there a cost for Baptism?
There is no fee for receiving Baptism. It is normal for the priest to be offered a donation (“stipend”) and our Parish asks for a contribution towards expenses. However, no-one will be prevented from receiving Baptism for financial reasons.

Embracing the Call to Serve

Confirmation is just the beginning of a life of faith in action. As confirmed Catholics, we are called to live out our faith every day, serving others, seeking justice, and sharing the Good News. The Holy Spirit empowers us to make a difference in our families, communities, and the world.

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.”
