Reconciliation

"A Journey Back to God’s Embrace, A Path to Peace."

Welcome to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as Confession, where we experience the boundless mercy of God. This sacrament offers us a chance to reflect, repent, and be renewed in our relationship with God and others. Through Reconciliation, we find healing and strength to continue on our journey of faith, knowing that God’s love and forgiveness are always within reach.

What is Reconciliation?

Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing, given to us by Jesus to restore our bond with God whenever we have strayed. In this sacrament, we confess our sins with a sincere heart, express true contrition, and receive absolution from the priest. Through the words of forgiveness spoken by the priest, we are reconciled with God and the Church, freed from the burden of sin, and granted the grace to start anew.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

The Importance of Reconciliation

Reconciliation is more than a moment of forgiveness; it is a powerful encounter with God’s mercy. When we take time to confess our sins, we open ourselves to transformation, healing, and a renewed sense of peace. This sacrament helps us grow in humility, strengthens our resolve to avoid sin, and draws us closer to the love of God, who never ceases to call us back to Him.

How to Prepare for Confession

Entering into Reconciliation with a prepared and open heart makes the experience more meaningful. Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare:

  1. Examine Your Conscience: Reflect on your thoughts, words, and actions. Consider how you may have failed to love God and others. Many find it helpful to use a guided examination of conscience, which is available at our Parish or online.

  2. Express Sorrow for Your Sins: Genuine contrition, or sorrow, is essential for a good confession. Approach Reconciliation with a humble heart and a true desire to turn away from sin.

  3. Be Ready to Change: Commit to making amends and improving where you can. Reconciliation is not only about forgiveness but also about striving to live a better, holier life.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation: What to Expect

If you’re new to Reconciliation or it’s been a while since your last confession, don’t worry—our priests are here to guide you. Here’s what you can expect during confession:

  • Greeting: The priest will welcome you and begin with the Sign of the Cross.

  • Confession of Sins: Speak honestly and openly about your sins. There’s no need to feel afraid; the priest is there to offer God’s mercy, not to judge.

  • Prayer of Contrition: You’ll say a short prayer expressing your sorrow and intention to change.

  • Absolution: The priest will extend his hand, say a prayer of absolution, and you’ll receive forgiveness from God.

  • Penance: The priest will assign a penance—often a prayer or act of kindness—as a step toward spiritual growth.

Regular Confession: A Path to Spiritual Growth

The Church encourages regular confession (monthly or even more frequently) as a means to grow in holiness. Reconciliation isn’t only for grave sins; it’s also an opportunity to bring smaller faults to God and seek His guidance for a life of virtue. Embracing the sacrament regularly keeps us mindful of our faith and strengthens our relationship with God.

  • What if one parent isn’t Catholic?
We warmly welcome families from all backgrounds. At least one parent should be committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
  • How many godparents can we choose?
The Church requires at least one Godparent but it is common to have two – one male and one female. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, confirmed and at least 16 years old. Additional friends or family members who are baptized Christians can act as honorary godparents or "witnesses".
  • Is there a cost for Baptism?
There is no fee for receiving Baptism. It is normal for the priest to be offered a donation (“stipend”) and our Parish asks for a contribution towards expenses. However, no-one will be prevented from receiving Baptism for financial reasons.
