Matrimony

"A Sacred Bond, Blessed by God, Rooted in Love."

Welcome to the Sacrament of Matrimony—a beautiful, lifelong journey in which a man and a woman are united in a sacred bond, committed to loving and supporting one another through all of life’s joys and challenges. Marriage is a gift from God, a reflection of His own unending love, and a powerful reminder of His presence in our lives.

What is Matrimony?

Matrimony is a sacrament of service and commitment, where two individuals vow to live as one, in unity and love. In the presence of God and the Church community, they promise to be faithful to each other, to support one another, and to build a family rooted in Christian values. Through this sacrament, the couple receives God’s grace to live out their vocation of love, compassion, and mutual respect.

“Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Mark 10:9)

Marriage Preparation Programme

Our Parish offers a marriage preparation program to help couples understand the sacredness of Matrimony and prepare for a life of shared faith and love. We walk alongside couples as they get ready for this lifelong commitment, providing guidance and support every step of the way.

Our program includes:

  • Faith-Based Workshops: These sessions explore the meaning of Christian marriage, family life, and the importance of faith as the foundation of a successful marriage.

  • Spiritual Reflection and Prayer: Couples are invited to deepen their relationship with God through shared prayer and reflection, recognising that a strong marriage is built on a shared faith.

  • Guidance on Catholic Teachings: We offer insights into Catholic teachings on marriage, including topics like openness to children, family planning, and the roles and responsibilities of a Catholic family.

The Marriage Ceremony

A Catholic wedding is a beautiful and reverent celebration of love and commitment. Here’s what to expect during the ceremony:

  1. Procession: The ceremony typically begins with a procession, symbolizing the couple’s journey toward a shared life in Christ.

  2. Liturgy of the Word: Readings from Scripture emphasize the sacred nature of marriage, reminding the couple and guests of God’s love and guidance. [Download Readings for the Celebration of Marriage]

  3. Exchange of Vows: The couple makes solemn promises to love, honour, and cherish each other for life, sealing their commitment.

  4. Blessing and Exchange of Rings: Rings are blessed and exchanged as a symbol of the unbroken circle of love that binds the couple.

  5. Nuptial Blessing: The priest offers a special blessing, asking God to grant the couple grace, love, and faithfulness in their marriage.

Planning Your Wedding at Our Parish

If you are considering celebrating your wedding at one of our churches, we would be honoured to help make this day special and spiritually meaningful. Here’s how to get started:

  • Meet with Our Priest: It is recommended that couples contact their parish priest at least 12 months before their desired wedding date. This allows sufficient time for preparation and completion of necessary formalities. Couples are also encouraged to schedule an initial meeting with the priest to discuss the sacrament and ask any questions.

  • Book a Wedding Date: After completing the initial meeting and marriage preparation, you can book a wedding date. We recommend starting the process early to secure your preferred date.

  • Marriage Preparation ProgramCouples are required to attend a marriage preparation course, provided by our parish or other organisations.

  • Prepare Necessary Documents: You’ll need to provide certain documents, including Baptismal Certificates (issued within the last six months), Confirmation Certificate (if applicable), Proof of Freedom to Marry (e.g., affidavit or annulment documents if previously married), Civil Requirements (marriage license or equivalent), and any other documents requested by the Parish office.

  • What if one parent isn’t Catholic?
We warmly welcome families from all backgrounds. At least one parent should be committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
  • How many godparents can we choose?
The Church requires at least one Godparent but it is common to have two – one male and one female. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, confirmed and at least 16 years old. Additional friends or family members who are baptized Christians can act as honorary godparents or "witnesses".
  • Is there a cost for Baptism?
There is no fee for receiving Baptism. It is normal for the priest to be offered a donation (“stipend”) and our Parish asks for a contribution towards expenses. However, no-one will be prevented from receiving Baptism for financial reasons.
