Holy Orders
"Called to Serve, Chosen to Lead, Sent to Love."
Welcome to the Sacrament of Holy Orders—a sacred calling to serve God and His people. Through Holy Orders, men are ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops, dedicating their lives to guiding, teaching, and ministering to the faithful. This sacrament is a unique and profound vocation, rooted in love, sacrifice, and the mission to share God’s grace with the world.
What is Holy Orders?
Holy Orders is the sacrament of apostolic ministry, conferred through the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration. It is a continuation of Christ’s mission on earth, empowering those ordained to act in His name. This sacrament has three degrees—deacon, priest, and bishop—each with its own responsibilities and duties in serving the Church.
“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21)
The Path to Holy Orders
Answering a call to Holy Orders is a journey of deep discernment, faith, and commitment. The Church offers guidance and support to those who feel drawn to this vocation, helping them explore their calling and prepare for the responsibilities of ordained ministry.
-
Discernment Process: Men considering Holy Orders are encouraged to spend time in prayer, reflection, and conversation with a spiritual director. Discernment often involves speaking with clergy, attending retreats, and immersing oneself in the life of the Church.
-
Seminary Formation: For those who continue on the path, seminary education provides theological, pastoral, and spiritual training. This formation helps candidates grow in their understanding of Church teachings and prepares them for a life of service and leadership.
-
Stages of Ordination:
-
Diaconate: The first degree of Holy Orders. Permanent deacons serve the Church through preaching, assisting at Mass, and performing works of charity. Transitional deacons are those preparing for the priesthood.
-
Priesthood: Priests are ordained to lead communities, administer the sacraments, and provide pastoral care. They dedicate their lives to guiding the faithful, celebrating the Eucharist, and sharing the Gospel.
-
Episcopate: Bishops are entrusted with the responsibility of shepherding the Church. As successors of the Apostles, they oversee dioceses, ordain new priests and deacons, and safeguard the teachings of the Church.

What if one parent isn’t Catholic? We warmly welcome families from all backgrounds. At least one parent should be committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
-
How many godparents can we choose? The Church requires at least one Godparent but it is common to have two – one male and one female. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, confirmed and at least 16 years old. Additional friends or family members who are baptized Christians can act as honorary godparents or "witnesses".
-
Is there a cost for Baptism? There is no fee for receiving Baptism. It is normal for the priest to be offered a donation (“stipend”) and our Parish asks for a contribution towards expenses. However, no-one will be prevented from receiving Baptism for financial reasons.
