Parish Bereavement Team

A Shared Ministry:
Together in Grief, Together in Support
Your Time and Care Can Make a Difference

Who we are

The Parish Bereavement Team represents our parish community and offers care, comfort and practical support to families who have experienced bereavement and who request a Catholic funeral.

We understand that bereavement is a very personal and family time. We are not here to intrude, but to offer support whenever it may be helpful — before or after the funeral, and sometimes even weeks or months later.

Confidentiality

We will treat all matters with sensitivity and confidentiality, unless someone appears to be in danger.

How it works

We aim to form a team of 8–10 parishioners, led by a Team Leader/Co-ordinator. Team members usually serve in pairs.

When a funeral is requested:

  • A pair of team members will be introduced to the bereaved family by the Parish Priest or a member of parish staff.

  • The family will receive a leaflet explaining this ministry and letting them know the team will be in touch.

  • The team members will then arrange a visit to:

    • offer support and condolences

    • listen to the family’s needs

    • help plan the funeral liturgy (either a Funeral Service or a Requiem Mass, as appropriate)

At the funeral

Team members will normally attend the funeral liturgy, representing the parish community and offering any practical help needed.

Working together

The Bereavement Team works closely with the Parish Priest, parish staff, and the Parish Safeguarding Representative. Team members receive initial formation and meet occasionally to review the ministry, share learning, and deepen understanding.
